Empire AI will establish New York as the national model for responsible AI technology. It will facilitate statewide innovation, groundbreaking research, and the development of AI technologies. By leveraging the state’s rich academic resources and research institutions, Empire AI will drive innovation in fields like medicine, education, energy, and climate change, all while giving New York’s researchers access to computing resources that are often prohibitively expensive and only available to big tech companies.

The Empire AI consortium includes seven founding institutions—Columbia, Cornell University, New York University, RPI, SUNY, CUNY, and the Simons Foundation.

Empire AI aims to establish a state-of-the-art AI computing center in Buffalo to facilitate statewide innovation, research, and development of AI technologies. This investment in responsible AI innovation will allow New York’s research institutions to pioneer safe, equitable, and accessible AI research and development that will benefit the public good and the statewide economy. By positioning New York at the forefront of AI research and development, Empire AI will build and attract the next generation of tech talent in New York, and solidify New York’s stance as an international hub for developing AI technology for the public good and AI-powered businesses.
HOW DOES EMPIRE AI PLAN TO SUPPORT AI RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT?
Right now, access to the computing resources that power AI is prohibitively expensive and difficult to obtain, and big tech companies are cornering the market. By providing access to high-performance computing resources, Empire AI will empower academic institutions to focus on AI’s unique capabilities to solve complex problems, including those presented by AI itself, fostering a statewide ecosystem of innovation. This is the first time this kind of computing power will be in the hands of public and research-focused institutions.
